Review of the Bridge Card Game

The Bridge Card Game presents a sophisticated alternative to traditional card games, sharing lineage with Bid Whist and Spades, all of which stem from the classic game of whist. In Bridge—also referred to as Contract Bridge or Rubber Bridge—the objective is for a partnership to accrue the most points over a series of games, with two game wins required to conclude a match known as a rubber.

• Goals of Bidding: At the onset of each deal, participants must estimate the number of “tricks” their team anticipates winning, along with declaring a specific “trump suit.” A bid consists of a number (ranging from 1 to 7) and a trump suit (or notrump, NT). The team making the final bid must succeed in winning that number of tricks plus an additional six, culminating in the highest bid being termed as the “contract.”
• Bidding Process: Players may choose to either bid or pass during their turn and can even opt to double the most recent bid of their opponents. The opposing team has the option to redouble. These actions affect scoring, with doubled bids providing double points and redoubled bids yielding quadruple points. The bidding phase concludes once three consecutive players pass, and the player initiating the trump suit is designated as the “declarer.”
• Gameplay: The player seated to the left of the declarer begins by leading the first trick with a card from their hand. Subsequently, the declarer’s partner’s cards are displayed face-up (the "dummy hand") and played by the declarer for the remainder of that deal. Players must follow suit when possible; if unable, they are permitted to play any card, including one from their trump suit. A trick is won by either the highest trump card or, if no trumps are played, by the highest card of the leading suit. The victor of each trick then leads into the next.
• Scoring: The declarer's team earns contract points upon fulfilling their contract’s requirements, while overtricks yield additional points for each trick won beyond the contracted amount. Conversely, undertricks award points to the opposing team if the contract is not fulfilled. Scoring is further enhanced for doubled or redoubled contracts.

    • If Notrump (NT): 40 points for the first trick and 30 for each subsequent trick

  Upon achieving 100 or more contract points, the current game concludes and another begins. Additional points are awarded for small slams (12 tricks) or grand slams (13 tricks), and honors points are granted for securing top trumps at the start of play.
